Arenal Volcano Region
Arenal Volcano RegionLa Fortuna area is one of the most amazing regions in the country, with cloud forests, active and dormant volcanoes, hot springs, waterways, wildlife refuges, caves, extreme sports, bird watching and pastoral landscapes. This is a living example of how, over the years, an agricultural community has turned itself into a vigorous tourism and shopping destination. It is the obligatory starting point for wildlife and hanging bridge trips to Arenal Volcano, Cerro Chato and the Arenal Reservoir.
The Arenal Volcano is perhaps the best known feature of this region, it raises from between the green hills of Alajuela, a perfect cone which amazes night time viewers, as fiery red stones spew from the crater several hundred feet into the skits shape is that of an almost perfect cone and presents spectacular shows of red lava eruptions that remind you of carnival fireworks contrasted against the dark night or down sky. It rises 1,633 meters above sea level and casts an almost flawless silhouette on the land bellow it. Often spewing ash and smoke, the volcano provides a striking backdrop for photographs and video. After nightfall the spectacle of Arenal`s bright red lava coursing its way down from the cone is an awesome sight indeed. . After shooting into the air, the stones tumble down the north slope of the volcano. The park has several trails from where hikers can see much of the park´s wildlife in addition to the remains of lava flows. The area is overflowing with animals and plants, as well as places to stay for every taste.
Tabacon River has become a major attraction for this area, since its thermal waters – with an average temperature of 37 C (98.6F) area ideal for relaxing muscles, cleansing the skin and relieving stress.
Several nearby enterprises have installed facilities for accessing and enjoying the hot springs such as staggered pools at varying temperatures nestled within beautiful gardens and surrounded by tropical forest.
La Fortuna River’s Waterfall: The cascade has fall of seventy meters and a capacity of forty water gallons per second, together with the panorama that offers the water is the quantity of animal species and plants that are in this beautiful place.
The Adrenal Lake is part of a hydroelectric project that began the ICE (Costa Rican electricity Institute) in the year 1970 and it was concluded in 1978. The lagoon covers an area of 85 km2 and under it waters the towns of Arenal and Pueblo Nuevo.
Venado Cavers: They are located in this district of Venado, 3 kilometers to the east, on the highway to Upala, only 67 kilometers from Ciudad Quesada. The Cavers of Deer where discovered starting from 1962, when the first expedition took place, in 350 meters and it is in 1969 when they carried out three explorations, discovered 1.550 meters in 8 different rooms from these caverns. In 1991 another exploration was carried out and they found another four more rooms, with that, these cavers reach a longitude of more than two thousand meters.
Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge
It is located in the canton of Los Chiles, Province of Alajuela. It combines the Lagoon of Caño Negro and their surroundings with an extension of 9.960 hectares. It was created by executive ordinance in January 20th. 1984, being based on different studies carried out by international organizations as the Tropical Scientific Center and national as the University of Costa Rica which main purpose was to protect and to conserve the flora and fauna of one of the biological areas with more diversity in the country.
